This class will look at three movements in the United States in which Jews have played a central role. What roles did Jews play? What motivated Jews to participate in these movements? How was American Jewish culture and Judaism affected by their participation? What happened when Jews took different sides?
The class will focus on the labor movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Civil Rights Movement from the late 1950s to the 1970s, and the feminist movements from the 1960s to the 1980s.
Taught by Riv-Ellen Prell.
